Founder

Matilda was born during my own journey into motherhood.

I had been making candles as a hobby for years, and I've always loved beautiful scents in my home. But when I became pregnant, I started looking at candles very differently.

As I researched what was actually inside many scented candles, I realised how difficult it was to find candles that felt truly suitable for homes with babies and young children. Many products on the market contain strong fragrances and ingredients that I personally didn't feel comfortable burning around my growing family.

​

I found myself asking the same questions many parents ask:

Are scented candles safe around babies?
What scents are safe for newborns?
Can I use candles in a nursery?

Unable to find exactly what I was looking for, I started creating my own candles using natural ingredients and carefully selected essential oils. At first, I wasn't trying to build a business. I simply wanted beautiful scents I felt comfortable using in my own home.

​

What surprised me was what happened next.

​

As my daughter grew, I noticed how strongly children respond to familiar sensory cues. Just like a bedtime story, a warm bath or a favourite blanket, certain scents became part of our daily routines.

The same gentle aroma that filled the room before stories, cuddles and bedtime gradually became something she recognised. Over time, I noticed how those familiar scents seemed to help signal the transition from playtime to sleep time, creating a calm and comforting atmosphere before bed.

That's when I became fascinated by the power of scent cues and the role they can play in helping children feel secure, calm and prepared for what's coming next.

​

What began as a personal project soon became a heartfelt mission.

I wanted to create candles that do more than simply smell beautiful. I wanted to create products that help families build meaningful rituals, support calm moments throughout the day, and bring a sense of comfort to busy homes with babies and young children.

Today, every Matilda Organic candle is inspired by that same idea: creating a home that feels calm, safe and welcoming for the people who matter most.

It's a reflection of my own motherhood journey, my love of natural home rituals, and my belief that the smallest moments often become the memories our children carry with them for years to come.
